Nitric oxide supplements: the mechanism is real, the doses usually are not
L-citrulline genuinely improves blood flow. The gap between the studied dose and the average capsule is where most of your money goes.
Circulation supplements are unusual in this market: the mechanism they claim is real, well documented and taught in undergraduate physiology. The problem is almost never the science. It is the arithmetic.
How it works
Nitric oxide signals the smooth muscle in blood-vessel walls to relax. Relaxed walls mean a wider vessel, and a wider vessel means more flow at lower pressure. L-citrulline raises the body's capacity to produce nitric oxide โ more effectively than L-arginine taken directly, because arginine is largely broken down in the gut before it reaches circulation.
None of that is controversial. It is why citrulline appears throughout sports-nutrition research.
Now the arithmetic
The trials that found measurable effects on exercise performance and blood flow generally used 6 to 8 grams of citrulline malate, or around 3 grams of pure L-citrulline, per day. That is a substantial amount of powder โ enough to fill several large capsules on its own.
A great many circulation formulas list citrulline at a few hundred milligrams, alongside a dozen other ingredients. At that level the ingredient is present, the label is truthful, and the effect the research found is not on the table. Working out which situation you are in takes ten seconds with the panel.
The hard safety line
Anything that widens blood vessels stacks dangerously with nitrate medication prescribed for angina. That combination can drop blood pressure sharply and is genuinely hazardous. If you take nitrates, this category is closed to you without a cardiologist's agreement โ full stop.
The same caution applies more mildly to blood-pressure medication generally, and to prescription treatments for erectile function, which work through the same pathway.
Rule these out first
Before spending anything on an energy or circulation supplement, get four things checked: iron, thyroid, vitamin D, and sleep apnoea. Each produces exactly the fatigue people try to supplement away, each is diagnosable with a test, and each has a real treatment. That appointment costs less than three months of capsules and is far more likely to find the answer.
Then, if you still want one
Our Boosted Flow review covers the option in our rankings whose stated mechanism matches its ingredient list most closely, and it tells you exactly which number to look for. The full vitality and circulation rankings apply the same test to everything else.
