The four blood tests worth having before you buy any supplement

Fatigue, brain fog and low drive have four common medical causes that a capsule will not touch. All four are testable, and all four are treatable.

The symptoms that send people to supplement funnels โ€” tiredness, poor concentration, low motivation, weak recovery โ€” overlap almost exactly with four ordinary medical findings. Each one is diagnosable with a blood test or a referral, and each has a real treatment.

Spending on capsules before ruling these out is the most common expensive mistake in this whole market.

1. Ferritin and full blood count

Iron deficiency causes fatigue and poor concentration long before it causes anaemia, which is why a normal haemoglobin result is not enough on its own. Ask for ferritin specifically. It is common, especially in people who menstruate, in endurance athletes and in anyone eating little red meat โ€” and iron replacement, taken properly, works.

2. Thyroid function

An underactive thyroid produces fatigue, mental slowness, weight gain, cold intolerance and low mood โ€” a list that maps almost perfectly onto what brain and energy supplements advertise against. TSH is the standard first test. If it is off, the treatment is a prescription that resolves the symptoms properly.

3. Vitamin D

Deficiency is widespread at northern latitudes, particularly through winter, and it presents as fatigue and low mood. It is cheap to test and cheap to correct โ€” and correcting an actual deficiency does far more than a multivitamin taken by someone who was already replete.

4. Sleep apnoea

Not a blood test, but the most under-diagnosed item on this list. Loud snoring, witnessed pauses in breathing, and waking unrefreshed after a full night are the signals. Untreated apnoea causes daytime exhaustion, cognitive impairment and worse insulin sensitivity โ€” which is why it also belongs in the sleep and blood sugar conversation. Treatment changes people's lives in a way no supplement does.

Why this matters commercially

This site earns money when people buy supplements through our links. Telling you to see a doctor first costs us commission. We publish it anyway, because a supplement bought to fix an untreated thyroid problem will not work, and a recommendation that does not work is worth nothing to anyone.

If your results come back clear and you still want to try something, that is a reasonable position to be in โ€” and the vitality rankings are where to start.
